Geology: Internships and Careers

Geology students have an abundance of internship opportunities to build experience, enhance resumes, and often lead directly to jobs. We strongly encourage and support our students in efforts to seek internships. Students typically seek internships during the summer between their sophomore and junior or junior and senior years. An internship is designed to provide the opportunity to apply classroom theory to realistic, professional-level situations. It is intended to provide a concentrated, practical experience at a progressive agency or organization. The concepts and experiences acquired in the classroom are honed and fine-tuned at this level to prepare students for their careers.

Each summer, many institutions around the country offer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) programs. Many of these programs provide valuable opportunities to explore research and get a taste of what graduate school might be like.  Many of these programs also offer housing and a summer stipend. The National Science Foundation (NSF) Directory of Summer REU   has further information.

Recent graduates of our geology program have found employment with environmental consulting firms and governmental agencies. Our program also prepares students for careers with energy companies, mining companies or engineering firms.

Cal U prepares students to enter the workforce with knowledge, integrity, character and experience. With the help of Career Services. we’ll connect you to potential employers through networking events, job shadowing opportunities, on-campus recruiting, job and internship fairs, and organizational visits.
